Lessons
A series of work/life lessons from the walk, as posted on my LinkedIn page each week.
#11: Persuasion works better after listening.
Persuasion is pervasive. Or, rather, attempts at it. We try to influence our children, partners, bosses, co-workers, clients, stakeholders…and others are equally encouraging us to see their point of view. We like to think we take advice after weighing up the merits. In practice, we don’t have time, so we tend to rely on those we trust. And that trust is built by listening, exchanging and living up to promises.
A couple were hosting me via Airbnb. We sat down for a cup of tea and a chat. They asked me what I was doing and I launched into my story – including advocacy about cervical cancer awareness. They listened quietly. Looked at each other. And then told me their story. Their 23 year old daughter goes to doctor, asks for a pap smear. Doctor says no, under NHS guidelines, screening offered from age 25. They’re worried, so go to a private doctor, who identifies early cervical cancer, treats it, and now she’s a healthy 27 year old.
Powerful story. I should’ve listened before talking.
