From June 2018 to June 2019, I walked 4,314 miles around England and Wales in memory of my wife Melitta, who died in 2015 from cervical cancer. My challenge was in aid of Cancer Research UK.
We can eradicate cervical cancer in just one generation! And save the lives of 250,000 women (daughters, wives, mothers, sisters, partners, friends...) who die each year. How?
Cervical cancer is caused by a virus, HPV. Around 8 out of 10 of people are exposed to it sometime in their lifetimes.
A safe, effective vaccine exists. In the UK and Australia, 10 years after its introduction, HPV infection among young women has fallen by 85-90%!
Regular cervical screening (pap smears) is also critical for women aged 25-64. This can catch cell changes before they become cancerous. In the UK, around 28% of women miss their screening appointments. If that number falls, more women will live.
