A series of work/life lessons from the walk, as posted on my LinkedIn page each week.

#14: Criticism is everywhere. Genuine, heartfelt appreciation is rarer – and highly motivational. Use it more.

Stumbled upon a diamond in the rough last week (see picture). Rather a vibrant, architectural-marvel café/shop/community centre in a tiny, rural Welsh coastal village, half staffed by volunteers, half by staff paid the Living Wage (http://cletwr.com/). Haven from wind and rain. For electric car drivers, the only charger for 30 miles. Above all, bringing the village together. Owned by the community, for the community.

As I supped my tea, I asked a few questions, punctuated the odd “Wow, that’s so cool” and “Who had this vision?”. Each of the volunteers told me their story. They proudly told me so many things I struggled to remember everything. Then the manager came up and explained how they’d turned the vision into reality, and how it was financially sustainable. They responded to my appreciation and I went away, determined to spread the word.

We all benefit from giving and receiving appreciation. Its under-used.
