Lessons
A series of work/life lessons from the walk, as posted on my LinkedIn page each week.
#24: The personal touch really matters. The difference between neutrality/slight negativity and warm positive feelings.
Two Airbnb “complete house” rentals last week for a group of us. Both cases: we arrived early evening after long walks along Hadrian’s Wall. Ready for a cup of tea. House 1: no host visible, no teabags, milk, nothing at all in kitchen beyond appliances. No obligation, but depressing nonetheless. Off to supermarket a few miles away.
Next day, next house, little more expensive. Met by beaming owner; she proudly showed us upgrades she’d made in her house. Good chat. Kitchen replete with tea, coffee, milk, biscuits, wine, beer...we exclaimed in delight.
8am Sunday morning, time to leave. England still asleep, depressed by Wales rugby result. My van added to the silence by not starting. Airbnb host emerged, half-asleep, from nearby house, mustered husband and relatives; early morning jump-starting party was successful. You can’t ask for more than that.
Personal touches create “wow, that was great” memories.
