Walking along a remote part of the Lincolnshire coast. Tide has retreated about half a mile, endless sand melds with the sea and sky. Like a scene out of a movie, a galloping horse appears on the horizon, at the sea’s edge. Back and forth, almost flying, with such grace. We see a man with a camera, perhaps they’re filming. We stroll towards the sea, trying to be nonchalant. Eventually we meet the horse, and her rider, a teenage girl. Both breathless with excitement, and joy, and the wind. The cameraman is her grandfather, together with his wife. The horse was destined for the knacker’s yard, they tell us, so they intervened, and bought her. What happiness that decision brought – to the girl, the horse, to themselves, and to us, as onlookers. Off they galloped again, into the spray of the sea, and all of our hearts sang. Little do we know how our acts of kindness will play out.
