A series of work/life lessons from the walk, as posted on my LinkedIn page each week.

#36: Optimistic, positive “followership” makes a huge difference.

Bucketing down! Tropical rainstorm in rural Suffolk. A friend and I were 400 yards from ending a 10 mile walk, at a T junction. Left or right? One way there was shelter and food, in the form of a pub. But, unusually, it didn’t show on the map (having recently re-opened after years of closure). On Google maps, but I couldn’t access the phone, as everything was wet. I was leading, as I had the map. Turned right. We trudged along, walking through the deepening puddles. 400 yards later…we asked someone…wrong way!

My friend had come up from London that morning and was walking in his work clothes, computer in his backpack, barely protected by a small umbrella. He could’ve been a little dismayed. Instead, he laughed and said this would make the day even more memorable. He was joking the whole time. 20 minutes later we were drying off the in the pub.

What a great guy! His bonhomie saved the day. We’re all followers sometimes; this is the way to be.
