A series of work/life lessons from the walk, as posted on my LinkedIn page each week.

#4: Walking begets thinking. But walking and thinking need to be accompanied by talking.

I’ll illustrate with a thought from today’s walk. A topical subject: sexual assault.

 

We know its massively under-reported. Most people don’t want to go to the police. They keep it to themselves or tell a close friend. So let’s look at what’s happening in some private companies: the appointment of “respectful work advisors”, who listen and provide confidential advice to employees who are not ready to use formal grievance mechanisms.

 

So why not train and appoint individuals as “harassment/assault advisors” for the public? They would listen, record details and provide informal advice, all confidentially. Sometimes its easier to tell a stranger. Imagine if the 15-year-old Dr Ford had been able to speak to someone like that 30 years ago. And information could be released later if the victim authorizes it. Issues: Who pays for the training? Who pays for the time of the experts?

Lesson #1: Checklists work, but they take real discipline to use.
