England’s 630-mile South West Coast path is a triumph of citizen activism, dating from the 1970s. Lots more information about the path and how it came about can be found here. Because the path exists now, quite a few people resolve to walk its whole length, either at one go or in stages.
The SW Coast Path is very well signposted. Most of this blog is simply pictures of the different signposts. But first I must mention a woman who my brother in law and I came across a couple of days ago. We were huffing and puffing up another steep hill. A lady was walking down and we had a chat. She was walking the whole SW Coast Path and was excited because she was nearly finished - just one more 7 mile section after that day's walk. She had been doing it in 25 mile segments for about 10 years. The woman was 84 years old. Yes, eighty four! And she mentioned that she had had to take a year off during the decade of walking the path because she had donated a kidney to someone! What a woman!
Laurence, I have just now checked in on your progress, and I see that you are in Cornwall already! Fabulous progress. I've looked at several of your blog posts - witty, informative, insightful, all wonderful stuff. Well noted about Slapton - we've actually read Ken Small's book. I did walk the Hope Cove to Salcombe coastal path some years ago. We can visualize you there. Thanks for what you are doing. -- John Coogan
